Homeward Bound – Worship with The Sanctuary Boston

Join us TOMORROW! Sanctuary is worshiping together again!

Join us tomorrow, Wednesday, September 3rd in the Barn Room at First Parish Cambridge Unitarian Universalist for a special homecoming and farewell worship with The Sanctuary Boston. Gather at 6 PM for snacks and fellowship, and worship beginning 6:15 PM. Dinner to follow!

Many of us are coming home to our spiritual community for the first time in months (!!), excited to be together again and to begin a new year of worship and community life. Others will be coming to Sanctuary for the first time ever, eager to experience our community.

As announced earlier in the summer, the Sanctuary’s founder and coordinator, Dave Ruffin, is heading to Tulsa for a ten month ministerial residency and is stepping down from leadership. A journey of faith that began three years ago, and has involved us all, is not ending. But for both Dave and the Sanctuary, the journey is entering a new chapter. This worship will be a chance for reflection, goodbyes and gratitudes.

As also announced, more recently, the Sanctuary Boston is simultaneously welcoming community member Mykal Slack into leadership as our new Director of Worship. Mykal has been with Sanctuary since our first worship in October of 2012 and he has continued to call Sanctuary home and make Sanctuary feel like a home to others within our community. We couldn’t be more blessed by his willingness to lead and serve us this way.

Amidst milestone departures, transitions, returnings and new arrivals, how can and do we experience “homecoming.” Amidst the enduring heartbreak of human suffering – in the world, in our neighborhoods and in our own hearts – how can we strengthen our practice of co-creating sanctuary? How can we live deeper into the reality of each and every being as holy and loved? How can we turn our fears, our anger, our despair into outstretched hands… into embrace? How can we make this place home?

We start, as always, by showing up, as we are, in love.

“Hold on to me as we go, as we roll down this unfamiliar road. And although this wave is stringing us along, just know you’re not alone, ’cause I’m gonna make this place your home.” from Home by Drew Pearson & Greg Holden
